End of the Google Bomb?
In the past few years a practice by website owners and SEO experts, coined Google Bombing, gained notoriety. But it seems this practice is soon coming to an end.
Websites get ranked in Google based on many factors, with the most important being the number of other websites linking to the site, and the second being what the links actually say in them (called the ‘anchor text’). Webmasters and Bloggers that understood this would undertake strategies to manipulate the rankings in Google for, usually, humorous purposes. This practice was called Google Bombing.
There are many examples of Google Bombing in practice, with one of the most popular Google Bombs being the phrase ‘miserable failure’ which, if typed into Google would bring up the biography of George W. Bush.
Another Google Bomb which still works is that of ‘French military victories’ which if you typed into Google and hit ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ would bring up an error page saying that it did not have any matches.
In the beginning, Google would put up a sponsored link letting the user know that it was not the opinion of Google, so as to keep their algorithm purely mathematical. But recently, Google has taken steps to stop this practice, by coming up with an algorithm that stopped this type of activity.
Is this really the end of the Google Bomb? Or will the website community find new ways of letting off a Google Bomb?
