Hi Michael,

Although ‘noise’ coming from people typing in searches into Google to check their own rankings can affect long-tail keyword phrases, it won’t have a significant impact on the shorter, more-competitive keyword phrases.

Also, you can filter out ‘noise’ by using the Google Traffic Estimator and sorting the keywords by highest value, which is based on the estimated cost per click (CPC) of a PPC ad multiplied by the estimated number of clicks you will receive (ie. keywords at the top of the list will not be affected by ‘noise’ as they are based on actual bids paid by advertisers).

Hi Alex,

great video – just a query which I have been trying to find a solution for for a while now – how do you actually account for distortion/noise coming from website owners and seo companies checking their rankings continually by typing in keywords like mentioned in your video. Wouldn’t that in the case for web design companies totally distort the result ?
