Google flipped the SEO industry on its head with its Penguin update. In this episode, Alex explains why he’s excited the new era of SEO.
Hi, my name’s Alex Cleanthous, chief strategist at Web Profits, and today, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on why I’m excited about the new era of SEO.
Now for those of you who don’t know me, I have a stutter and it comes out when I get excited… and this stuff is exciting. So let’s get into it.
Google’s updates to the SEO landscape last year flipped the SEO industry on its head. Websites that had been implementing SEO for some time lost their rankings to websites that seemingly hadn’t invested in SEO at all. That caused a lot of frustration for the businesses that had lost their rankings.
The shift that Google made was a big one. That’s for sure. But it’s a really good one.
You see, in the past, SEO was all about building as many links to your website as possible, with the keywords you wanted to rank for in those links. And that was a challenge, because you had to figure out how to build links that had a keyword like ‘home loans’ in the link. That meant that every tactic you implemented was based on getting a link with ‘home loans’ in it, rather than your company name.
Then Google implemented its Penguin 2.0 update and actually stopped websites from ranking for a keyword if they had too many instances of that keyword in their links.
Now, Google could rank a website for a keyword without that keyword being in any of the links to that site.
Now, Google wanted to see the majority of links to the site have the company name, rather than a keyword. And that’s why I’m excited.
You see, in the past, to rank at the top of Google, you needed to do what worked, and that meant implementing tactics where you could get a link with a keyword in it – and that was limited.
I’m excited about the new era of SEO because now, you can build links to your site with your company name in them. And that opens up the game completely.
I’m excited about the new era of SEO because now, you don’t need to try to squeeze a keyword in an article because that’s what works – you can write an article however you like, and put your company name in the resource box at the end of the article.
I’m excited about the new era of SEO because now, you don’t need to dismiss certain links because you can’t put a keyword in them – you can get as many links as possible from industry websites with your company name in them.
I’m excited about the new era of SEO because now, it’s all about quality, not quantity. And there’s no one size fits all strategy any more.
I’m excited about the new era of SEO because now, the ‘cheap’ SEO tactics that were scalable are now gone. Each website is different, each market is different, each industry is different.
I’m excited about the new era of SEO because the shift in Google’s requirements has opened up a whole lot of new opportunities for companies that are quick to adapt and quick to take advantage when a new opportunity arises.
I know that we’re one of those companies. Are you?
