10 Link Building Strategies for Higher Search Engine Rankings

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Search Engine Optimisation

When it comes to search engine optimization, getting other websites to link to your website is the most important factor in achieving top search engine rankings. Here is a list of 10 link building strategies which you should be implementing for top search engine rankings (in no particular order):

1. Write quality articles – write quality articles that other websites will want to post on their websites and link to. The higher the quality of the article, the more one-way links you’ll get. The best articles to write are ‘how-to’ and informational articles. Stay away from self-promotion.

2. Start a Wordpress blog – setup a Wordpress blog on your website and post articles to it once per week. It’s a great way to build the size of your website, keep your website content fresh and get incoming links. Plus Google loves Wordpress!

3. Syndicate your articles online – take the articles that you’ve posted to your blog and syndicate them on article directories such as Ezine Articles and Go Articles, so that other website owners can post them on their websites.

4. Submit your website to online directories – submit your website to free SEO friendly website directories for a quick way to start building one-way links to your website.

Optimising Your Video And Images For Search Engines

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Search Engine Optimisation

In order to be recognised on major search engines including Google, Yahoo, MSN, and others, you have to utilise SEO, or search engine optimization, when creating web content. While many people are able to do this using keywords and phrases in their written content, they oftentimes forget to add keywords to their visual content.

By not adding keywords to video, graphics, pictures, charts, and other images, you are missing out on a good opportunity for increased exposure on the Internet.

TYPES OF IMAGE OPTIMISATION

There are two types of image optimization that you can use in order to have your images picked up by web spiders that are looking for keywords. You should take advantage of both when optimizing your images:

• HTML Attributes – When uploading an image or video, you will be asked to tag it with a name or phrase so it can be found easily in the code.

Are Link Exchanges Worth It?

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Search Engine Optimisation

When it comes to SEO, the new trend is to create back links or links that are placed on another web site so people and search engines will be able to find your site easily on the web. But you should trade links with every website that invites you to? While there are a number of ways to create back links that don’t include linking to another small business website, it is the easiest way to attract online attention.

Other ways to create back links online include:

• Creating a blog and attaching your URL address to each post
• Making comments on other blogs and leaving your URL
• Submitting articles online and including your URL in the byline
• Adding your URL to your email signature
• Joining social networking sites and including your URL in your profile page

As you can see, there are a number of ways to create back links, but each will require a little bit of your time. Link exchanges are very easy in comparison, but you should do your homework before agreeing to swap.

Wikipedia & Search Engine Optimisation - #2 Is The New #1

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Search Engine Optimisation

If you have tried searching for a topic using Google lately, you may have noticed that Wikipedia entries are ranking higher and higher, many times ranking in the number one and number two positions. While Wikipedia has a reputation for being less than factual in the information they present, many people have found their articles useful.

Anyone with an interest in a topic can write an article and submit it to the Wikipedia database. If another person wants to add to it, they can edit sections and upload new information. Even though all sources must be documented, this has not stopped inaccurate information from being published online.

Why is Wikipedia Ranked #1?

This is the main topic of discussion among those in the search engine optimisation community who carefully follow each trend and method of increasing their ranking on search engines. There are several reasons as to why Wikipedia is ranking #1 more often:

  • Wikipedia has thousands of pages that are keyword rich and have high PageRank
  • Wikipedia has excellent internal linking structure, with every page on Wikipedia linking to many other Wikipedia pages
  • Most of the internal links in Wikipedia are contextual, meaning that they are located within the content, rather than through menus
  • Many other websites link to Wikipedia pages as a reference source, passing PageRank
  • Wikipedia does not pass any PageRank to external sites

Lost in the Black Hole

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Search Engine Optimisation

The Internet black hole. It’s a place that, as a website owner or developer, you don’t want your website be in. With 489,876,431 entries existing per key phrase and only 1,000 entries being listed per search, it is easy for your website to get lost in the void.

But, there is a way to avoid getting trapped in the black hole. There is a way for your website to be listed in the 1,000 entries. Without this technique, there is no way for search engine users to find your website unless you give them your URL directly. And, that’s not very efficient.

The answer to evading the black hole is keyword themes.

Keyword themes, which use specific search engine optimization formulas in early on web development, tie one original keyword phrase as a theme for all images, tags, titles and links, headings, and sub webs. Using keyword themes can effectively ensure a high placement in the search engines. Your website will most definitely be listed in the first 1,000 entries, and in just a matter of 30 – 45 days, your website will be listed in the top 25. Additionally, using keyword themes is a good way to cut advertising and marketing expenses.

Keeping in mind the goals for web development is a surefire way to maximizing the efficiency of keyword themes. The goals for web development are pretty evident: inform, entertain, and covert visitors; attract spiders from as many engines as possible; and rank high in search results for a particular keyword.

Proof That Linking Is The Key To SEO Rankings

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Search Engine Optimisation

There are many aspects of search engine optimisation (SEO) that are uncertain… constant questions SEO experts have about what factors Google takes into account for rankings in its search engine.

But the one factor that all (competent) SEO experts agree upon is that the links pointing to your website, and what those links say, are the MOST IMPORTANT factor is getting a #1 ranking in Google.

What is the proof?

We have a few examples…

You’ve probably stumbled across a few websites where you could download a report, ebook or document of the like in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format. You would have also seen on most of those sites a link to the Adobe Acrobat website with instructions that if you don’t already have Adobe Acrobat, click here to download it now.

Well if you type ‘click here’ as a search in Google you’ll see the Adobe Acrobat download page in the #1 position. The reason behind the ranking is that there are so many websites linking to this page with ‘click here’ in the anchor text that the website ranks at the top of Google for that keyphrase.

End of the Google Bomb?

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Search Engine Optimisation

In the past few years a practice by website owners and SEO experts, coined Google Bombing, gained notoriety. But it seems this practice is soon coming to an end.

Websites get ranked in Google based on many factors, with the most important being the number of other websites linking to the site, and the second being what the links actually say in them (called the ‘anchor text’). Webmasters and Bloggers that understood this would undertake strategies to manipulate the rankings in Google for, usually, humorous purposes. This practice was called Google Bombing.

There are many examples of Google Bombing in practice, with one of the most popular Google Bombs being the phrase ‘miserable failure’ which, if typed into Google would bring up the biography of George W. Bush.

Another Google Bomb which still works is that of ‘French military victories’ which if you typed into Google and hit ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ would bring up an error page saying that it did not have any matches.

In the beginning, Google would put up a sponsored link letting the user know that it was not the opinion of Google, so as to keep their algorithm purely mathematical. But recently, Google has taken steps to stop this practice, by coming up with an algorithm that stopped this type of activity.

Calculating the Value of a #1 Ranking in Google or Yahoo

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Search Engine Optimisation

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the holy grail of Internet marketing because of the allure of ‘free’ traffic.

A #1 ranking in Google and Yahoo for high-volume search phrases can be very profitable for any business.

But how much is a top ranking actually worth?

One way of estimating the value of a top ranking in Google or Yahoo is by calculating the cost of a top position for a particular keyword phrase in the Pay-Per-Click (PPC) engines.

For example…

Let’s say you want to estimate the value of a #1 ranking in Yahoo for ‘car insurance’. Here’s one way of estimating the value of this ranking:

1. First we research the number of people searching for ‘car insurance’ on Yahoo Australia. We find that there were 26,210 searches last month for that phrase.
